A Bailey bridge at Pachuria in Gopalganj collapsed on Sunday morning, causing a sand-laden truck to fall into a nearby canal and severely disrupting traffic on the Tekerhat–Gopalganj–Ghonapara regional highway.
The incident occurred around 8am while the truck was crossing the bridge. An easy-bike and a bicycle also fell into the canal during the collapse. Although no immediate fatalities were confirmed, the vehicle has yet to be fully recovered, with towing operations still ongoing.
Following the incident, traffic movement in the area came to a standstill, forcing commuters to take a detour of around 1.5 kilometers. The bridge serves as a key urban link, connecting schools, colleges, markets, courts and government offices, leaving thousands of daily commuters affected.
The Roads and Highways Department began reconstruction work on Monday morning. Officials said efforts are underway to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.
“We have started reconstruction work and expect to complete it within two to three days,” said Jahangir Alam, executive engineer of the Roads Department.
Authorities are continuing recovery operations while restoration work progresses at the site.
