4 killed, 15 injured as bus plunges into ditch in Brahmanbaria

Local residents rushed to the scene and joined rescue efforts before police and fire service personnel arrived

Four people, including a woman and a child, were killed, and at least 15 others were injured after a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Brahmanbaria's Sarail upazila on Monday.

The accident occurred around noon in the Baishamora area on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.

According to police, a Diganta Paribahan bus travelling from Madhabpur in Habiganj to Brahmanbaria town lost control while attempting to overtake a truck and veered into a ditch.

Three of the deceased were identified as Munshi Arash Ali, 70, of Shahbazpur Major Mia Para in Sarail upazila, Moushumi Das, 30, of Pubarpaikpara in Brahmanbaria town, and Tanoy Majumdar, 23, of Ibrahimpur union in Nabinagar upazila. The identity of the child victim could not be confirmed immediately.

The injured were taken to Madhabpur hospitals in Habiganj, Sarail Upazila Health Complex and Brahmanbaria General Hospital for treatment.

Khatihata Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Taher Dewan said four passengers died on the spot and at least 15 others sustained injuries in the crash.

After being informed, police recovered the bodies and completed the necessary legal formalities before handing them over to family members, as no objections were raised by relatives.

Legal action is being taken in connection with the incident, the OC added.
