Dhaka-TangailJamuna bridge highway returns to normal after 20 hours of gridlock

Eid travel congestion eases as authorities implement one-way traffic and manage breakdowns, restoring smooth movement by Wednesday night

Update : 27 May 2026, 10:37 PM

After nearly 20 hours of severe traffic congestion, the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway returned to normal on Wednesday night.

Traffic movement became smooth around 9pm, and vehicles are now moving without major disruption.

Earlier, on the final day of the Eid journey, the highway experienced intense congestion due to excessive traffic pressure, breakdowns of several vehicles on the Jamuna Bridge, road accidents and rain, causing immense suffering for homebound passengers.

Police worked tirelessly to ease the situation.

Police and Jamuna Bridge authorities said severe congestion had started in the Chandra area of Gazipur on Wednesday night, which later affected the Tangail stretch. Long queues of vehicles formed from the Jamuna Bridge to Mirzapur, creating nearly 50km of traffic jam.

Although congestion in Chandra later eased, the Tangail section remained heavily affected. As the day progressed, traffic pressure increased further and several minor accidents occurred, eventually bringing movement on the highway to a near standstill.

To improve northbound travel, authorities repeatedly implemented one-way traffic through the Jamuna Bridge from morning, which gradually reduced congestion in the afternoon. By 9pm, traffic flow fully normalized.

In the last 24 hours, 56,239 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating toll revenue of Tk38,29,97,050.

Passengers said it took 16 to 18 hours to cross the Jamuna Bridge section, causing severe suffering for women, children, the elderly and the sick. They urged a permanent solution to such recurring Eid travel congestion.

Elenga Police Outpost In-Charge Md Sharif said the highway became normal after 8pm, with no traffic jam or slow movement at present. Police and highway authorities worked continuously to manage the situation.
