High-yielding BRRI Dhan-108 gains popularity in Gopalganj

BRRI Director (Research) Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said the variety combines high yield, short duration, and premium grain quality

Cultivation of BRRI Dhan-108, a high-yielding rice variety developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), is expanding rapidly in Gopalganj, driven by its strong yields, premium grain quality, and fair market price.

The grain of BRRI Dhan-108 is finer than traditional varieties such as Kataribhog, Nazirshail, and Jirashail, closely resembling polao rice. With a protein content of about 8.8%, cooked rice is fluffy, flavorful, and retains its quality for extended periods—traits expected to boost consumer demand.

Agronomically, the variety offers several advantages. Its sturdy plants are resistant to lodging and less vulnerable to pests and diseases. Each panicle produces around 250–270 grains, while broader leaves contribute to higher straw yield—an added benefit for farmers.

According to the BRRI regional office in Gopalganj, the variety was approved by the National Seed Board in 2024 and introduced on a limited scale in 2025. It yields about 8.7 tonnes per hectare, with potential for higher output under favorable weather conditions. This season, cultivation has expanded significantly as BRRI and the Department of Agricultural Extension promote the variety through demonstration plots and seed multiplication programs.

Rabindranath Biswas, a farmer from Borashi South village in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj, cultivated BRRI Dhan-108 on one bigha of land last year on a trial basis and harvested 45 maunds. He reported lower input costs due to reduced requirements for fertilizer, irrigation, and pesticides.

“I found the rice very tasty, and it stays good for 8 to 10 hours after cooking,” he said, adding that the grain is currently selling at Tk 80–90 per kilogram in local markets. With a growth duration of around 150 days, the crop allows farmers to grow jute or other crops afterward.

Other farmers in the area have reported strong yields and plan to expand cultivation in the coming seasons.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Mafroza Akter said BRRI Dhan-108 is gaining rapid acceptance among farmers. While only about 10 acres were cultivated last year in Gopalganj Sadar, the area has increased to around 100 hectares this season. However, she noted that it may take a few more years before the rice becomes widely available at a commercial scale.

BRRI Director (Research) Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam said the variety combines high yield, short duration, and premium grain quality. “It has strong potential to gain widespread popularity among both farmers and consumers. With good market prices, farmers can achieve higher profits,” he said, adding that the variety can produce yields comparable to hybrid rice and its seeds can be preserved for future cultivation.

He expressed optimism that BRRI Dhan-108 will contribute significantly to boosting national food production and strengthening food security.
