Over the past year, 40 pirates were arrested and 43 firearms recovered from the Sundarbans in anti-piracy operations.

Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon on Sunday said that joint operations continue under Home Ministry directives, with ‘Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans’ and ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’ conducted with Navy, Police and RAB support.

During coordinated patrols, he said, surveillance was strengthened in rivers and canals, significantly reducing piracy. Public awareness activities continue among forest-dependent communities with regular communication and security patrols, he added.

Authorities said members of pirate groups—including Karim Sharif, Nana Bhai, Choto Suman, Alif, Dulabhai and Asabur gangs—were arrested.

Weapons seized included 10 live shells, 186 cartridges, 299 blank cartridges and two homemade bombs, along with other arms. Several hideouts were also destroyed.

Additionally, 37 fishermen, two tourists and a resort owner were rescued and handed to their families.

Officials said surveillance and joint operations will continue to curb piracy and ensure security in the Sundarbans region going forward under strict monitoring measures.
