Police seized 80 kilograms of hemp from a sand-laden truck in the Thengamara area on the outskirts of Bogra town and arrested a drug trafficker during a late-night operation on Tuesday.
The arrested was identified as Rabiul Islam (25), son of Mamun Akand of Krishnapur village in Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur district.
According to police, a team of Detective Branch (DB) set up a temporary checkpoint on the Dhaka–Rangpur highway around 12:45am following a tip-off. During the operation, they stopped a sand-carrying truck (Dhaka Metro-T-16-9276) heading towards Bogra from Rangpur.
Upon searching the vehicle, police found three plastic bags concealed under the sand. After opening them, authorities recovered a total of 80kg of hemp.
Bogra DB Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar confirmed the incident through a press release on Wednesday afternoon.
He said a case has been filed against the accused under the Narcotics Control Act at Bogra Sadar Police Station. The truck used for transporting the drugs has been seized.
The arrested man was sent to jail through court Wednesday afternoon.
Police said investigation is underway to identify the source of the drugs and possible involvement of others in the network.
