Transport owners issue 48-hour ultimatum demanding fare revision

Leaders warned that if their demands are not met within 48 hours, they will halt all types of vehicle movement—including buses and trucks—from Rangpur

Rangpur District Motor Owners’ Association and Motor Workers’ Union have issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding a revision of public transport fares in response to rising fuel prices.

The announcement was made on Tuesday after leaders of the two organizations submitted a memorandum outlining a three-point demand to the Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur.

A delegation led by the association’s General Secretary Wasimul Bari Raj handed over the memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Rahul Amin. The demands include: immediate adjustment of transport fares in line with increased fuel costs, strict measures to prevent overcharging beyond fixed fares, and steps to balance public affordability while safeguarding transport operators from financial losses.

Leaders warned that if their demands are not met within 48 hours, they will halt all types of vehicle movement—including buses and trucks—from Rangpur.

After submitting the memorandum, Wasimul Bari Raj said that despite significant increases in fuel prices, transport fares have not yet been adjusted, resulting in heavy financial losses for operators. He stressed the need for a “reasonable and justified” fare structure.
