A leader of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead by suspected rival armed group members in Rangamati on Friday morning.
The victim was identified as Dharma Sing Chakma, central vice-president of Democratic Youth Forum, an associate body of UPDF, and son of Dhananjay Chakma.
The incident took place around 7:00 am in the Kutukchhari residential area under Rangamati Sadar upazila. According to police and local sources, a group of 19 to 20 armed men allegedly linked to Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) surrounded Chakma’s residence while he was inside.
As he attempted to flee, the attackers opened fire, killing him on the spot. Two of his sisters were also injured in the attack, according to UPDF sources.
Officer-in-Charge of Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, Jasim Uddin, confirmed the incident, stating that police were sent to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting.
The UPDF has blamed Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS) for the attack. UPDF supporters staged protests by blocking sections of the Rangamati–Khagrachhari road, particularly in Naniarchar and Kutukchhari areas.
