Driver held over KU student Moumita’s death

Police said the accused has been produced before the court

Police have arrested a driver and seized a private car in connection with the death of a Khulna University (KU) student in a road accident in the city.

Additional Police Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) confirmed the development on Monday.

The deceased, Moumita Halder, was a Master’s student of the Law Discipline at Khulna University.

According to police and case details, the accident occurred around 6:50pm on March 30 while Moumita was travelling by rickshaw with her father towards the court area.

When the rickshaw reached in front of the Zila Parishad Bhaban under Khulna Sadar Police Station, a speeding private car hit it from behind on KD Ghosh Road.

Moumita fell from the rickshaw and suffered critical head injuries. She was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead around 7:50pm.

Following the incident, her father filed a case with Khulna Sadar Police Station the next day.

Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Debabrata Biswas reviewed nearby CCTV footage and identified the vehicle involved.

Police later recovered the blue Toyota car from a garage behind Coronation School on April 3.

Using information technology, officers arrested the driver, Md Ahad Sheikh Saikat, 26, from the Hadis Park area on April 5.

Police said the accused has been produced before the court.
