Villagers snatched away an accused from police custody in Hijoldanga under Keshabpur upazila of Jessore, leaving a sub-inspector and two constables injured, police said on Thursday.

According to police sources, a team from Keshabpur Police Station led by Sub-Inspector Asmat Ali conducted a raid around 1:30am on Wednesday to arrest Jahangir Hossain, 35, son of Aminuddin. He was apprehended from his residence.

Shortly after the arrest, announcements were made over mosque loudspeakers in the area, allegedly spreading false information that the accused had been beaten to death by police. The announcement prompted villagers to gather at the scene, where they attacked the police team and forcibly freed the accused.

During the attack, SI Asmat Ali (54) and constables Shahidul Islam (35) and Habibullah (30) sustained injuries. Constable Shahidul Islam was admitted to Keshabpur Upazila Health Complex with chest injuries and a wounded finger, while the others received treatment.

Police said Jahangir Hossain is a convicted offender in three cases. He was re-arrested at around 11:30am on Thursday from a border area.
