Following the Eid holidays, a large number of people has started returning to the capital Dhaka, resulting in heavy traffic on the Jamuna Bridge. Around Tk 2.98 crore has been collected as toll from a total of 37,110 vehicles which crossed the bridge in the past 24 hours.
Syed Riaz Uddin, Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge site office, confirmed the figures to reporters on Friday afternoon.
According to the bridge authorities, from midnight on Wednesday to midnight on Thursday, 15,642 vehicles heading to Dhaka crossed the bridge, yielding toll of Tk 1.37 crore. Meanwhile, 21,468 vehicles traveling towards northern Bangladesh paid toll totaling Tk 1.61 crore.
Syed Riaz Uddin said the traffic surge is due to people returning to the capital after the Eid holidays. “Vehicles are being processed through a total of 18 booths—nine on each side of the bridge. Out of these, two booths on each side are dedicated solely to motorcycles. We are striving to keep all toll booths operational around the clock,” he added.
The Jamuna Bridge has been collecting toll since its opening in 1998. Initially, toll collection was managed through the Commuter Network System (CNS). Since the government change in late 2024, toll is now being collected by the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
