Train movement resumed at Santahar 21 hours after a derailment in the Bagbari area of Santahar in Adamdighi upazila of Bogra, following the repair of the rail line and recovery of the coaches, officials said.

The Khulna-bound Simanta Express, which left Parbatipur, passed over the restored line and reached its destination on Thursday at around 12:00 pm.

However, Western Railway authorities said trains will operate at a slower speed than before.

The intercity Nilasagar Express, en route from Dhaka to Chilahati, derailed on Wednesday at around 2:30 pm in the Bagbari area north of Santahar Junction in Adamdighi, Bogra. Nine rear coaches of the train derailed, disrupting rail communication with five northern districts. More than 200 passengers were injured.

Two relief trains from Pakshey and Parbatipur reached the site at around 7:00 pm on Wednesday and began recovery operations and repair work on the track, which continued until 11:00 am Thursday.

Bogura-3 (Adamdighi-Dupchanchia) Member of Parliament Abdul Momin Talukdar, Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Dr. A N M Bazlur Rashid, Bogra Deputy Commissioner Taufiqur Rahman, and senior railway officials visited the site.

Bangladesh Railway Rajshahi Chief Engineer Ahmad Masum said two relief trains from both sides began rescue operations Wednesday evening. With cooperation from all, the derailed coaches were recovered and the damaged rail line was repaired.

He added that train movement has resumed but will operate at a slower speed over the repaired section.

MP Abdul Momin Talukdar said an investigation committee has been formed into the incident and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
