A total of 20 candidates, including two heavyweights, have lost their security deposits for failing to secure one-eighth of the total votes cast in their respective constituencies in the 13th national parliamentary election held on February 12.
Election officials confirmed that out of 34 candidates across the district, 20 lost their security deposits due to insufficient votes.
Among those losing their deposits were Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagorik Oikya, and Shariful Islam Jinnah, presidium member and former three-time MP of Jatiya Party. According to Additional District Election Officer Achia Khatun, the candidates who failed to get at least one-eighth of the total valid votes have lost their deposits.
In Bogra-2 (Shibganj), Manna bagged only 3,426 votes out of 248,493 cast —about 1.4%—far short of the approximately 31,000 votes required to retain his deposit. Jinnah fared worse, receiving just 434 votes. Despite being considered prominent figures, both candidates placed low among the seven contenders in the constituency.
Manna had initially been expected to contest as part of a BNP alliance candidate, but he failed to get its nomination. He briefly sought candidacy in Dhaka-18 before withdrawing and ultimately ran in Bogra-2. Jinnah had announced his withdrawal from the race a week before polling, citing an unfavourable electoral environment.
Eighteen candidates also lost their security deposits in the district. In Bogra-1 (Sariakandi-Sonatala), three candidates from smaller parties failed to meet the required threshold. In Bogra-3 (Adamdighi-Dupchanchia), two candidates, including one from Jatiya Party, lost their deposits. The same occurred in Bogra-4 (Kahaloo-Nandigram), Bogra-5 (Sherpur-Dhunat), Bogra-6 (Sadar), and Bogra-7 (Gabtali-Shajahanpur), where multiple candidates from parties such as Islami Andolon Bangladesh, LDP, the Communist Party, JSD, and the Muslim League failed to secure sufficient votes.
The results showed a fierce contest primarily between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami candidates. Ultimately, BNP candidates swept all seven seats in Bogra.
Winners included Kazi Rafiul Islam (Bogra-1), Mir Shahe Alam (Bogra-2), Abdul Mohit Talukder (Bogra-3), Mosharraf Hossain (Bogra-4), Golam Mohammad Siraj (Bogra-5), Tarique Rahman (Bogra-6), and Morshed Milton (Bogra-7). Jamaat-backed candidates were defeated in all constituencies.
