Seventy inmates at Bogra District Jail have voted through postal ballots for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election, jail authorities said on Monday.
Jail Superintendent Faruk Ahmed said the voting process was conducted over six days and ended at 5:00 pm on Sunday. A final report has been sent to the concerned authorities.
Jail sources said the prison currently houses 1,918 undertrial prisoners and convicted inmates. After inmates were informed of the postal voting option, 80 registered to vote.
However, four inmates were released after registration, one died, and one chose not to vote. Voting could not be conducted for two inmates due to address discrepancies, while two others were transferred to different prisons.
Postal voting at the jail began on February 3 and concluded on February 8.
Despite the jail’s large inmate population, registration remained limited. Faruk Ahmed said voting is a personal choice and participation cannot be enforced.
