Indefinite strike resumes at Chittagong Port over NCT lease

The fresh phase of the strike began at 8am

Update : 08 Feb 2026, 01:50 PM

Chittagong Port workers and employees resumed an indefinite strike on Sunday, following a two-day break, in protest against the decision to lease the port's New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) to UAE-based DP World.

The strike, led by the Port Protection Movement Council, began at 8:00 AM and comes after a six-day strike that ended on Thursday.

Port operations have come to a standstill, with activities suspended at various jetties, terminals, container depots, and outer anchorages. To ensure security and order, additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed at key port gates.

At a press conference on Saturday at the Chittagong Press Club, Md Humayun Kabir, coordinator of the Port Protection Movement Council, announced the resumption of the indefinite strike. Kabir reiterated the council's demand for the cancellation of the NCT lease agreement, citing concerns over national interests and the future of the port.

Earlier, a similar strike from January 31 to February 5 had resulted in significant disruptions and financial losses, according to port officials.

In response to the ongoing protests, the port authority has reportedly requested the relevant authorities to prevent 15 workers involved in the movement from leaving the country and to investigate their movable and immovable assets.
