He has also condemned attack on bauls

Update : 26 Nov 2025, 08:04 PM

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for compensation for victims of the recent fire at Korail slum.

He said thousands of people live in the Korail slum in Dhaka, and the fire had left many destitute.

“This is a severe blow to the poor. I urge the government to ensure compensation for the victims and conduct a proper investigation to determine the true cause of the fire. If anyone is found responsible, they must be brought to justice,” Fakhrul told journalists on Wednesday at around 3:30pm, after inaugurating the new office building of Thakurgaon District BNP.

He clarified that he does not consider the fire a conspiracy but stressed that inadequate fire safety measures and non-compliance with regulations, particularly in garment factories, often lead to such incidents. “If laws were properly enforced and effective fire safety systems were in place, many of these tragedies could easily be avoided,” he added.

On the attack on bauls

Separately, Fakhrul condemned the recent attack on Baul singers, describing it as a “shameful incident.” “Bauls represent an age-old cultural tradition of Bangladesh, performing folk songs across villages. Attacking them is an act of extremism and religious fanaticism,” he said.

Also present at the event were Thakurgaon District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Paigam Ali, Thakurgaon Municipal BNP President Shariful Islam Sharif, and other leaders of BNP and its affiliated organizations.
