A quiet night in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh turned into a scene of horror early Tuesday when unidentified assailants brutally murdered a man and his young daughter inside their home.
The victims — Ratan Mia, 32, and his seven-year-old daughter, Nuria Akter — were found dead in their residence at Amir Khan Kura village under Baghaitala union around 3am, police said.
Quoting locals, police reported that Ratan, a garment worker, had gone to bed after dinner when attackers broke into the house between 2am and 3am.
The assailants slit the throats of Ratan and his daughter as they slept.
Ratan’s wife, Julekha Akter, also came under attack but survived after screaming for help, prompting the attackers to flee.
She was rescued in critical condition and is currently receiving treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Haluaghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hafizur Rahman said police recovered the bodies early in the morning and sent them to MMCH for autopsy.
“Multiple police teams have visited the spot. We are investigating to identify the killers and determine the motive,” he said.
The double murder has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents demanding swift justice.
Mymensingh has seen similar incidents in recent months.
On July 14 this year, a mother and her seven-year-old daughter were found dead in their home in Bhaluka upazila, both victims of throat-slitting attacks.
