No arrests have been made in the attack on ATN Bangla cameraman Sujan Mia in Tangail despite a written complaint lodged by the injured journalist.
The main suspect, Roman, son of the Ward No-5 BNP president in Silimpur union of Tangail Sadar upazila, remains at large.
Sujan filed a written complaint at Tangail Sadar police station on Friday night following the attack, but by 2:30pm Saturday, the case had not yet been registered. This delay has sparked frustration among Sujan, his family, and the local journalist community.
The attack occurred around 5:30pm on Friday in Char Pakulla village of Tangail Sadar upazila during a kabaddi game that Sujan was covering. According to Sujan, referee Roman verbally abused him using obscene language. When Sujan protested, Roman punched and slapped him repeatedly. Several others then joined in, beating Sujan with bamboo sticks on different parts of his body and snatching a gold chain from his neck.
With assistance from locals, Sujan received initial treatment at Tangail Sadar Hospital.
Tangail Press Club Joint Secretary Kazi Tajuddin Ripon expressed concern over the delay in registering the case and the lack of arrests. “The recent spate of attacks on journalists across the country is deeply concerning. Prompt arrest and prosecution of suspects are essential to prevent recurrence of such crimes,” he said, urging authorities to act swiftly.
When contacted, Tangail Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Tanvir Ahmed advised speaking to Sub-Inspector Tajuddin. SI Tajuddin said that the OC decides whether a complaint is registered as a case but confirmed he was conducting raids to apprehend the suspects. Both the father and son accused are currently absconding.
Sujan said he was feeling insecure and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible.
