A woman who was raped and brutally assaulted in Muradnagar upazila of Comilla has left her parental home, along with her family members, with the police saying the family was overwhelmed by the constant flow of visitors from various professions, as well as persistent interview requests from journalists and YouTubers.
Since Tuesday morning, neither she nor her parents could be found at their residence.
Police say the situation had become “unbearable” and “embarrassing" for them, prompting the family to leave their home.
Meanwhile, former lawmaker Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad could not meet the survivor or her family members during his visit to express sympathy.
He alleged that the police moved them away from the house.
However, police stated that people from various professions have been visiting the house daily since the incident.
Additionally, they said, the woman’s life had become “unbearable” due to constant interviews by media personnel and YouTubers. To avoid such circumstances, she chose to leave home, they added.
On the night of June 26, allegations surfaced that a Hindu woman was raped after intruders broke down the door of her house in Bahechar village under Ramchandrapur South union of Muradnagar upazila.
The country erupted in outrage after two videos of the woman being stripped and tortured spread on social media.
In connection with the case, police arrested Fazor Ali, a resident of the same village, accused of rape, and four other youths for allegedly circulating the videos online.
According to local sources, the survivor and her family have not been seen at the house since Tuesday morning. On Monday afternoon, the survivor left her father's house to go to her husband's home. After that, her parents and other family members also left for another location.
Amid this situation, former MP Kaikobad visited the house. He too found no one from the family at home.
Expressing his frustration, Kaikobad said: “I came here to meet them and talk to them. I wanted to express my sympathy to the survivor and her family. But I could not find anyone. The police and our honourable ‘child adviser’ have conspired to take them away. I want to know what their motive is.”
When contacted, Muradnagar police station Officer-in-Charge Jahidur Rahman said: “She has every right to do so, as it is her personal matter. Every day, many people come to her house and ask questions. If she feels the need for security, it will certainly be provided.”
In response to Kaikobad’s allegations, the OC said: “They are not true. Politicians say all sorts of things. That is his personal opinion. A woman has been raped, and we are addressing the legal aspects of the case. You may question whether there is any deficiency in our legal proceedings. Beyond that, who says what does not concern us.”
