Three people were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a sand-laden pickup and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Mirsharai, Chittagong, on Saturday afternoon.

Among the deceased, a teenager named Saiful Islam Shahin, 17, died on the spot, while Sumi Akter, 30, and her son Manarul, 3, succumbed to their injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) around 8pm.

Two other members of the same family were also injured in the accident.

Local eyewitness Abu Sayeed said the collision occurred in the Chinki Road area when the CNG auto-rickshaw tried to give way to a reckless battery-run auto-rickshaw and collided head-on with the sand-laden pickup.

The pickup then rammed into the CNG and overturned on the side of the road, he added.

The injured were taken to Baraiyarhat BM Hospital, where one of them was declared dead on arrival.

Dr Mohammad Arif, the on-duty doctor at the emergency department of BM Hospital, said: “Five people injured in a road accident were brought to the hospital on Saturday afternoon. Among them, a teenage boy named Saiful Islam Shahin had died before arrival. Sumi Akter and Manarul were in critical condition, so they were referred to CMCH.”

Jorarganj police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mostaqin Hossain said: "The vehicles involved in the accident have been seized and brought under police custody. The pickup driver fled the scene and has not been arrested yet.

"No case has been filed as of now. Legal action will be taken if a case is lodged.”
