In response to a renewed rise in coronavirus infections, Mongla Port in Bagerhat has imposed special precautionary measures starting Friday morning.

Health screening equipment has been installed at the port jetty’s main entrance, and the use of face masks has been made mandatory.

Thermal scanners are being used to check body temperature of foreign vessel crew members and workers stationed at the port.

Port authorities said that specific protocols have been introduced for foreign sailors to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Md Makruzzaman, deputy director (Board and Public Relations) of the Mongla Port Authority, said: “Due to a recent increase in Covid-19 infections, special precautionary steps have been implemented at Mongla Port.”

He added: “Hand sanitization, temperature checks, and wearing of masks are now compulsory for entry to the jetty. As offices reopen on June 15, everyone has been instructed to follow Covid safety guidelines.”

He also said: “The port hospital has also issued a cautionary notice. Individuals displaying Covid-19 symptoms have been asked to contact two dedicated emergency numbers provided by the hospital.”

Currently, import and export activities at Mongla Port are operating normally. Loading and unloading at the jetty are ongoing, and traders continue to visit the port for their cargo operations.

Goods handling and transportation involving foreign commercial vessels anchored at fairways and other points of the port also remain uninterrupted.
