One new Covid-19 case detected in Chittagong

Chittagong City Corporation held an emergency preparedness meeting for Covid-19 on Wednesday

A 27-year-old man from the Halishahar area of Chittagong tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. The case was confirmed at the private Epic Healthcare facility on Tuesday.

Earlier, four individuals, including two women, tested positive on June 4, June 6, and June 9.

Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam said: “One new person has tested positive. Covid-19 first spread in Chittagong in 2020.”

He added: “Over the following two years, a total of 129,517 patients were treated, and 1,370 people died.”

Chittagong City Corporation convenes emergency meeting

To tackle a potential resurgence of Covid-19, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain urged all stakeholders in the health sector to work collectively.

He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, wear masks, and follow health guidelines.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists following an emergency preparedness meeting held on Wednesday at the Nagar Bhaban conference room.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Chittagong Medical College Hospital, BITID, Chittagong University, the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and Chittagong City Corporation health officials, among others.

The mayor announced that RT-PCR testing would be available at four facilities: Chittagong Medical College Hospital, BITID, the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and Chittagong University.

He added: “Additionally, rapid antigen tests will be conducted in different areas of the city and at CCC’s Memon-2 hospital.”

He further directed authorities to promptly prepare Chittagong General Hospital and CCC’s Memon-2 Hospital as dedicated Covid-19 treatment centres and to ensure adequate preparations at Chittagong Medical College Hospital for managing Covid patients.

The mayor said: “Awareness is our greatest weapon against Covid-19. Everyone must wear masks, wash hands regularly with soap, and maintain physical distancing. We must be prepared in advance to tackle this contagious virus.”

He also announced the launch of a CCC service centre through which citizens will be able to call and receive necessary assistance.
