Members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are also on duty

Update : 04 Jun 2025, 07:48 PM

Over 4,000 police personnel have been deployed on national highways to control traffic ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, announced Delwar Hossain Mia, the additional IGP (AIG) of the Highway Police.

Alongside the police, members of the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are also on duty.

He declared that coordinated efforts are underway to ensure smooth traffic management and to keep highways free from congestion.

He made these comments during a press briefing held on Wednesday afternoon at the Chandra Trimore area of Kaliakoir in Gazipur.

Expressing optimism, the additional IGP noted that despite potential disruptions due to rain, the Eid journey is expected to be comfortable and smooth.

He further said that there are 67 pothole-affected locations and 285 accident-prone areas on the highways.

He urged both passengers and drivers to proceed with caution in these vulnerable zones.

He also announced that on Thursday, a mobile application named “Hello HP” will be launched.

The app will include a fare chart, enabling passengers to easily check standard fares for any road across Bangladesh.

If any transport operator demands excessive fares, passengers can verify and report it using the app.

He added that discussions with bus owners’ associations have been held and they have assured the police that no fares beyond the approved rates will be charged.

Senior officials of the Highway Police and the District Police were also present during the briefing.

Gazipur is home to 2,176 registered industrial establishments, including 1,154 garment factories employing lakhs of workers.

From Thursday, most of these factories will begin their Eid holidays.

Even in cases where leave has not officially started, many workers have begun sending their families to their village homes since Thursday morning to avoid crowds and traffic congestion.

Despite visible crowds at key points such as Tongi, Vogra Bypass and Chandona Chowrasta on the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway and Chandra on the Dhaka–Tangail Highway, no major traffic congestion has been observed.

Meanwhile, Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) and the District Police are actively working to maintain normal traffic flow on the Dhaka–Mymensingh and Dhaka–Tangail highways. Although passenger and vehicle pressure is high, traffic is moving smoothly, allowing home-bound travelers to reach their destinations with ease.

Shawkatul Alam, officer-in-charge of Salna Highway police station, said that additional police forces have been deployed at key points on the highways to manage Eid traffic.

He anticipated increased pressure from Thursday afternoon until Eid night but expressed hope that, with the cooperation of law enforcement, drivers and passengers, travelers would be able to reach their homes safely and comfortably for Eid celebrations.
