More than 214,000 vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge during the five-day Eid travel period, generating over Tk 15.43 crore in toll revenue, according to bridge authorities.
The movement of holidaymakers along the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway concluded on Eid day after days of intense traffic pressure and lengthy congestion. From Sunday through Thursday midnight, a total of 214,003 vehicles used the bridge, while toll collection reached Tk 154,371,500.
Authorities said Tuesday recorded the highest traffic volume of the holiday period, with 56,239 vehicles crossing the bridge.
On the first day of Eid travel, Sunday, 39,919 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating over Tk 3.15 crore in toll. Of those, 22,112 vehicles headed toward northern districts, while 17,807 vehicles traveled toward Dhaka.
Traffic increased sharply on Monday, when 53,246 vehicles used the bridge. Toll collection for the day totaled Tk 3.77 crore.
Tuesday saw the busiest movement of the Eid rush, with 56,239 vehicles crossing the bridge and toll revenue reaching approximately Tk 3.83 crore.
On Wednesday, vehicle movement declined slightly to 45,889, while toll collection stood at Tk 3.50 crore.
On Eid day, a total of 18,710 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating Tk 1.26 crore in toll revenue. Traffic was almost evenly divided between northbound and Dhaka-bound vehicles.
Severe congestion gripped the Dhaka–Tangail–Jamuna Bridge highway on the final day before Eid, causing significant delays for homebound travellers. Authorities said normal traffic flow resumed after nearly 20 hours of disruption.
Police and bridge officials worked around the clock to manage traffic and reduce congestion during the peak travel period.
Syed Riaz Uddin, Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge Site Office, said authorities operated 18 toll booths—nine on each side of the bridge—to handle the increased volume of vehicles. Separate motorcycle booths were also kept in operation to facilitate smoother movement.
The bridge, inaugurated in 1998, has remained one of Bangladesh’s most important transport links connecting the capital with the country’s northern and northwestern regions.
Toll collection operations were previously managed through a computerized system. Since late 2024, toll operations have been conducted by China Road and Bridge Corporation under government arrangements.
Officials described the overall Eid travel operation as successful despite periods of heavy congestion, citing the uninterrupted movement of more than 214,000 vehicles across the bridge during the holiday rush.
