All types of vessel operations in Rangamati have been suspended until further notice following the intensification of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and its adjoining regions into a deep depression.
The decision was confirmed through an emergency notice issued by the Rangamati district administration on Friday morning.
The notice further mentioned that Inland River Ports have been placed under danger signal number 2.
In light of this, and for the safety of passengers and public property, the administration has instructed that all vessels operating along coastal and inland waterways cease operations until further directives are issued.
Moin Uddin Selim, president of the Rangamati Launch Owners’ Association, said that following the district administration's directive, all water vessel services, including launches operating between Rangamati and the upazilas of Baghaichari, Langadu, Barkal, Juraichari, Belaichari and Naniarchar, have been suspended due to the rough conditions on Kaptai Lake.
He also said that operations on these routes will resume in due course upon improvement in the weather and after receiving further instruction from the district administration.
Notably, people from six upazilas travel to and from Rangamati via waterways.
