Workers of MK Footwear Limited staged a protest inside the factory in Sreepur, Gazipur on Saturday, demanding their overdue wages for the month of April.

The demonstration lasted for four hours, from 8am to 12pm, within the factory premises in Chakpara village of Mawna union.

The protest ended after the factory authorities assured the workers that the factory would resume on Tuesday, and all outstanding payments would be cleared by Thursday.

The protesting workers said the factory authorities had earlier announced a 10-day general holiday, citing financial difficulties. Workers were expected to return to work on Saturday.

However, upon arrival, they found the factory gate locked. Frustrated by the extended closure and the non-payment of April’s wages, they began demonstrating at the gate.

Eventually, when the factory was opened, the workers entered and continued their protest peacefully inside. Later, the factory owner arrived and pledged to reopen the facility and settle all dues by the specified dates, prompting the workers to leave the premises.

Abdul Latif Khan, inspector of the Gazipur Industrial Police (Sreepur zone), said: “The factory authorities had extended the holiday without paying the April wages and posted a closure notice.”

He added: “Upon discovering this, the workers staged a peaceful protest inside the factory. The owner later arrived and assured the workers that the factory would reopen on Tuesday and all dues would be paid by Thursday. Following this assurance, the workers dispersed.”

Production at the factory remains temporarily halted due to a disconnected electricity supply.

It was not possible to reach any responsible official from MK Footwear Limited for comment regarding the matter.
