Two days after going missing from Begumganj upazila in Noakhali, the body of a Chhatra Dal leader has been found inside a septic tank at a house in the Sadar upazila.
However, police and the victim’s relatives could not immediately specify any motive behind the killing.
The body was recovered around 12:15pm on Saturday, from the septic tank of a newly built house adjacent to the Sawdagar residence in Durgapur village, Noannoi union of Sadar upazila.
The deceased was identified as Mir Hossain Saddam, 31, son of the late Mominul Haque of Manohar Ali Piano Bari in Rajendrapur village under Rajganj union.
He was the senior vice-president of Ward No 7 Chhatra Dal of Rajganj union and the manager of Solaiman Traders, a rod and cement shop owned by Jisan, the general secretary of the Rajganj Bazar Management Committee.
Speaking to police and locals, it was learnt that Saddam had gone missing around 9pm on Thursday from his native village, Rajendrapur, in Begumganj upazila. His family subsequently informed the Begumganj police verbally.
Around 6am on Saturday, several children who went to collect mangoes near the Sawdagar residence spotted a body wrapped in polythene inside a septic tank of a newly built house.
Alarmed by their screams, locals gathered at the spot and informed the police. Based on their information, a joint team from Sadar and Begumganj police stations recovered the body and prepared an inquest report at around 12:15pm.
Injuries were found on the victim’s neck and face. Preliminary investigations suggest he may have been killed by having his throat slit.
Sudharam Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation) Muhammad Abu Taher said that police recovered the body upon receiving the information and were working to uncover the mystery behind the murder.
He added: “The body is being sent to the morgue of the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for post-mortem examination.”
