Laila Begum, 50, who suffered critical burn injuries in a bomb attack on a moving CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Chittagong, has succumbed to her wounds.
She passed away around midnight on Thursday at her village home in Raozan Municipality.
Laila sustained burns on 90% of her body, including severe damage to her respiratory tract.
Her husband, Md Abbas, told Prothom Alo that Laila’s condition deteriorated while undergoing treatment in Dhaka, prompting the family to bring her back home, where she eventually died.
He has demanded justice and called for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to account.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30am on Sunday at the Aturar Depot intersection on the Muradpur-Oxygen Road in Chittagong city.
Laila and her daughter-in-law, Jharna Begum, were both injured in the attack and were initially admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Laila was later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment, while Jharna was discharged after receiving primary care.
The two were on their way to a shrine in Kutubdia, Cox’s Bazar, departing from their home in Raozan by auto-rickshaw.
When their vehicle reached the Aturar Depot area, they encountered fire on the road.
As the driver attempted to maneuver past the flames, three masked assailants hurled a petrol bomb at the vehicle.
Laila and Jharna, seated in the back, were injured in the explosion.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid Bostami Police Station Arifur Rahman, said that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the individuals involved.
He noted that a case could not be filed earlier as the victim’s family was not in Chittagong.
Police are currently preparing to register the case.
