Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet ) on Tuesday forcibly entered their residential halls by breaking locks, with the campus erupting in protest over their demand for the resignation of the vice-chancellor.
It began at around 2pm when the lock of Khan Jahan Ali Hall was broken open.
One by one, other dormitories followed.
Earlier, around noon, students held a protest march and urged faculty members in front of various departments to unlock the dorms.
The teachers, however, refused to comply.
Notably, amid student protests, an emergency syndicate meeting decided on Monday evening that academic activities would resume on May 4 and halls would be reopened on May 2.
The protesting students said they had been staging a sit-in for three days and two nights, enduring mosquito bites and harsh conditions while camping in front of the administrative building.
They added that despite their demands, the Kuet syndicate had not agreed to reopen the dorms immediately, prompting them to escalate their protest.
In the afternoon, they announced a one-point demand for the resignation of the vice-chancellor.
Following the announcement, groups of students went to each hall, urging teachers once more to open them. When no one responded, the students began breaking the locks themselves.
By 2:45pm, locks on six halls had been broken.
The process of unlocking Rokeya Hall was underway at the time of reporting.
