A man detained over the rape of a neighbour has allegedly committed suicide in police custody in Bhola, claim local police.
The incident took place at around 12:15am on Tuesday at Bhola Sadar model police station.
The deceased was Md Hasan, a resident of a village in Rajapur union of Bhola Sadar upazila.
Police took him into custody on Monday afternoon following allegations of raping a neighbouring housewife.
According to police and local sources, Hasan had gone to a neighbour’s house at around 3pm to store meat in their refrigerator. There, he allegedly attempted to rape the housewife.
Local residents caught him and beat him up before informing the police.
Officers then detained Hasan and admitted him to the hospital for treatment.
After receiving medical care, he was placed in police custody at around 8pm.
At approximately 12:18am, he allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a prayer mat inside the holding cell.
Bhola Sadar model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abu Shahadat Md Hasnain Parvez said: “CCTV footage from the police station shows Hasan wrapping a prayer mat around his neck and committing suicide. His body was later sent to the morgue.
"Meanwhile, the housewife is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Bhola."
