Police have arrested an Indian national over the attempted rape of a nine-year-old in Comilla.
The incident took place on the morning of Thursday, at a rented house owned by Mustafa in Raipur Singgula village of Iliotganj (North) union, Daudkandi upazila, Comilla.
The information was confirmed to Bangla Tribune via mobile phone on the morning of Friday, by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Police Station Md Junaid Chowdhury.
The accused Indian national has been identified as Tajindar Singh, 50, son of Pal Singh, a resident of Basipathana village in Ludhiana, Punjab, Chandigarh, India.
According to police reports, Singh has been working as an engineer at the Agro Ambush Limited factory in Mohammadpur, Daudkandi Upazila, for a considerable time.
In connection with his employment, he has been residing at a rented apartment in “Maa Manjil”, a residence owned by Mustafa in Singgula village.
On Thursday morning, Singh allegedly lured the child into his room with the promise of chocolate and proceeded to touch sensitive areas of the child.
Another child witnessed the incident and informed the child's mother.
In response to her (mother's) cries for help, local residents intervened and apprehended him.
OC Md Junaid Chowdhury said: “When the accused attempted rape, local residents apprehended him and handed him over to the police after physically assaulting him.
"He was later provided primary medical treatment at Gauripur Upazila Health Complex before being taken to the police station. A case has been filed against him under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and he has been sent to prison following a court order.”
