Angry mob set fire to the house on Thursday night

Update : 15 Mar 2025, 11:24 AM

The house of the accused of the rape and murder of the eight-year-old in Magura has been vandalized by local people, who took away bricks, tin, and cut down trees.

This incident took place throughout Friday at the house in Niznanduali Charpara in the district town.

Prior to this, on Thursday night, angry locals set fire to the house.

An unnamed individual said: "We will not allow a house where such a heinous crime has occurred to remain in our area."

Rabeya Khatun, a neighbor of Hitu Sheikh, mentioned that shortly after Iftar, a group of enraged people arrived and set fire to the house while also vandalizing it.

They removed the tin roofing and used hammers to break down the walls. During this time, they chanted slogans like "No place for rapists in our area."

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ayub Ali of Magura Sadar Police Station said that upon receiving news of the arson at the house of Hitu Sheikh, accused of raping the child, police attempted to visit the site several times but were unable to due to resistance from the angry mob.

However, they are ensuring the safety and property of innocent villagers are protected.

The eight-year-old child was raped late at night on March 5 while visiting her sister's house in Magura. She was initially admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital and later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital as her condition worsened.

With no improvement, she was then moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state on Thursday night.

As her condition deteriorated further, she was put on life support on Friday night and subsequently transferred to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) on Saturday afternoon, where she continued to receive treatment.

She passed away at the CMH in Dhaka on Thursday at 1pm. Prior to her death, she had suffered cardiac arrest four times on Wednesday and twice more on Thursday.

Her body was flown by helicopter to her village later that day, where she was buried in the family graveyard after the funeral prayers.

The child's mother filed a case against four individuals for the rape.

Four individuals have been arrested in this case: the child’s brother-in-law Sajib Hossain, 18, his father Hitu Mia, 42, brother Sheikh, 17, and their mother Jabeeda Begum, 40.
