Due to the low water level in the lake, no casualties were reported

Update : 10 Mar 2025, 07:58 PM

A passenger sank while traveling from Rangamati to Harina via Barkal on Monday.

However, due to the low water level in the lake, no casualties were reported.

Eyewitness Sulekha Chakma said the vessel, named ML Tania, suddenly sank upon reaching the Maishchhori area.

"Fortunately, the low water level prevented any injuries, and all passengers safely reached the shore. However, their belongings on board were submerged," she said.

Passengers on the vessel alleged that the accident occurred due to excessive cargo loading on the wooden vessel.

Debapriya Chakma, a resident of Barkal Sadar, confirmed that a separate boat had been dispatched from Barkal Sadar to assist in the recovery of the sunken vessel.

Barkal Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rifat Asma said while traveling from Rangamati to Harina via Barkal, the vessel's hull cracked at Maishchhori, causing water to flood in and sink the vessel.

Upon receiving the report, the local Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rescue team promptly arrived at the scene and ensured the safe evacuation of all passengers.
