Farida Akhter, adviser for the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, has said the interim government aims to start the trial of those behind killings during the July uprising, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates, before the general election to ensure justice.
She made the statement while inaugurating the Shaheed Mir Mughdo Gate at Khulna University by unveiling the nameplate on Sunday afternoon.
The gate has been named Shaheed Mir Mughdo Gate in memory of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdo, a former student of Khulna University who was martyred in the July uprising.
Following the inauguration, a discussion meeting was held at the university’s Liakat Ali Auditorium.
As the chief guest, Farida addressed the gathering, saying that the sacrifice of Shaheed Mir Mughdo and others has led to the creation of a new Bangladesh.
She emphasized that the youth have proven their willingness to make any sacrifice for their country.
She also stressed the responsibility of preserving the memory of these brave martyrs.
She further said that in a politically neutral campus, politically conscious students like Mir Mughdo continue to emerge.
"While Mughdo is no longer with us, many like him are still present on this campus. Mughdo was a student with a humanitarian spirit. His last words, 'Brother, who needs water?' as he was shot during the movement, resonated globally. Today, it is a matter of pride that I, along with Mughdo’s brother Snigdho, have inaugurated the Shaheed Mir Mughdo Gate in his memory at Khulna University."
She also addressed the demand for the expansion of Khulna University, saying that the students' request is logical.
Since both Khulna University and the Fish Seed Production Farm are government institutions, a fruitful discussion will lead to a solution that considers the benefits and drawbacks of both establishments, she added.
The discussion meeting was presided over by Khulna University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim.
The program began with the national anthem and a one-minute silence in memory of the martyrs of the July Uprising.
The event was attended by Khulna University teachers, students, staff, civil society representatives, journalists, professionals, and invited guests.
