Police arrested Abdul Malek, a 22-year-old madrasa teacher from Sreepur, Gazipur, on Saturday night for attempting to rape and sexually harass an eight-year-old girl.
The arrest took place at Jannat Nurania Hafezi Madrasa in Mawna (Uttarpara) Bagh, located in the upazila.
The incident occurred on February 27 at around 1:30pm, when Abdul Malek sexually assaulted the girl inside the madrasa while no one else was present.
He attempted to rape her but stopped upon hearing noises and released the girl. Before letting her go, he threatened her to remain silent about the incident.
After the assault, the girl refused to return to the madrasa, prompting her father to punish her.
Later on Saturday night she disclosed the attempted rape to her family. Following her revelation, her father filed a case with the Sreepur police station.
When news of the incident spread, local residents attempted to physically assault Abdul Malek. The situation was brought under control after the madrasa director informed the police, who then detained the accused from the scene.
Hasmat Ullah, in-charge of the Chakpara police camp under Sreepur police station, confirmed the arrest and the attempted assault by locals.
Shamim Akhter, the investigation officer at Sreepur police station, stated that Abdul Malek would be presented before a Gazipur court on Sunday noon.
