BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said if the Election Commission (EC) functions efficiently, the national election can be held in June or July instead of December, remarking that any delay will lead to public distrust toward the interim government.
Rizvi made these comments on Friday during an event at Bhuban Mohan Park in Rajshahi, where he met the families of martyrs from Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj and those who had been injured by law enforcement gunfire during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
The BNP leader said: "There are still 9-10 months left. If the EC wants, the election can be held by December. The EC will organize the election, and the government will assist them."
He also said that the public is eagerly awaiting the national election, and no other elections should be conducted prior to it.
Rizvi addressed the relations between India, Bangladesh, and the United States, raising the question of why India is so deeply concerned about Bangladesh.
He criticized India for its support of Sheikh Hasina's government and its actions along the Bangladesh-India border, referring to it as the "bloodiest" border.
He also discussed the issue of constitutional reforms, asserting that there is no need for a constituent assembly, as the country already has an existing constitution.
“The government should ensure justice for the people of the country, and elections should be held as promised,” he added.
He concluded: “The importance of holding the national election first, followed by the local government elections.”
