A young man named Al Amin, 32, was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Putia border in the Bayek Union of Kasba Upazila, Brahmanbaria, on the evening of Friday.
Al Amin, the son of Sultan Ahmed from the Putia village in Kasba Upazila, was reportedly shot while attempting to retrieve cattle from across the Bangladesh-India border.
The incident occurred around 7pm when BSF opened fire on him, causing him to fall to the ground. BSF personnel later took him to the Vishalghor hospital in Tripura, India, where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm.
Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Samiul Islam said: "The BSF members opened fire on him around 7pm, leaving him injured."
"Later, the BSF members took him to an Indian hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 9pm," he added.
Following the incident, there has been deep mourning within his family. His father, Sultan Ahmed, his mother, Minuara Begum, and his wife have been deeply affected by the tragic news, with several family members fainting in grief.
Sultan Ahmed and Minuara Begum expressed their shock and anger, saying that they never expected their son to be killed while simply trying to retrieve cattle. They demanded justice and urged the Bangladesh government to ensure his body is returned quickly.
Local residents of the village condemned the killing, calling it a brutal act and demanding justice for the young man's death.
A flag meeting is set to be held between the BSF and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Saturday.
As of the latest reports, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel are actively negotiating to bring Al Amin's body back to Bangladesh, though no clear information has been provided about when or through which border the body will be transferred.
This is not the first such incident in the area. On April 22, 2024, Mehedi Hasan, another Bangladeshi, was shot dead by BSF at the same border, and on November 25, two other youths, Rukon Uddin, 35, and Zakir Hossain, 30, were also injured by BSF gunfire.
