A 22-year-old was killed by a mob who suspected him to be a thief in Tongi, Gazipur, on Tuesday night, according to police.
The identity of the youth could not be known yet.
Police said locals caught the youth suspecting him to be a mobile phone snatcher in the Station Road area around 9pm and took him to a nearby field.
At one stage of their interrogation, the mob beat him up, leaving him dead on the spot, police said.
Tongi East police station Officer-in-Charge Faridul Islam said that being informed they recovered the body and sent it to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
An unnatural death case was filed in this regard, he said, adding that they could detain none until Wednesday morning.
