Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) have confined Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Mohammad Masud, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Ashraful Alam, and Director of Student Affairs Prof Dr Sajal Kumar Adhikary at the university's medical centre following an attack on students over political issues.
Protesters on Tuesday demanded that the VC take responsibility for the failure to ensure campus safety and resign unconditionally.
Shahaduzzaman Sheikh, public relations officer (additional duty) of Kuet's Public Relations, Information, and Publication Division, confirmed the incident on Wednesday morning.
He said that the VC had been receiving treatment at the medical centre in the afternoon due to illness. The deputy VC and the director of student affairs were also present when students confined them there. As of 11:45pm, they remained blocked inside the facility.
In response to the crisis, Kuet authorities have called a syndicate meeting at 11am on Wednesday to discuss the situation.
At a press briefing late Tuesday night, students issued a five-point demand, including the resignation of the three officials. They also warned that all classes, exams, and academic activities would be suspended if their demands were not met by 1pm on Wednesday.
