'On behalf of the police force, I apologize for the incident that took place last night'

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police’s (GMP) Sadar police station, Arifur Rahman, has been suspended for negligence in duty following an attack on activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Gazipur.

GMP’s additional commissioner (Crime & Ops), Taherul Haque Chauhan, confirmed the matter on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the afternoon, GMP Commissioner Nazmul Karim Khan visited the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s protest program on Rajbari Road in front of the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s office.

There, he said: “On behalf of the police force, I apologize for the incident that took place last night. I acknowledge our failure. No attacker will be spared—each attack will be responded to. Actions will be taken against any police personnel who delayed in responding.”

The police commissioner further added: “I have heard that my OC responded to your call two hours late. I want to make it clear that those who collude with fascism cannot remain in the police force. Those who have oppressed and persecuted this country for the past 17 years are now trying to rise again. We will not tolerate their resurgence.

"Sixteen people have already been arrested, and a combing operation will be conducted tonight to bring all involved to justice. The Ministry of Home Affairs has already made a decision. An operation titled "Operation Devil Hunt" will be launched to suppress Awami fascism.”

On Friday night, a group allegedly attempted to loot and vandalize the residence of former minister AKM Mozammel Haque.

In response, locals attacked members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, injuring several activists.

The movement’s leaders claim that Awami League members and their allies were behind the attack.
