Former social welfare minister and Lalmonirhat Awami League leader Nuruzzaman Ahmed has been placed on a five-day remand.
Judge Debi Rani Roy of the Metropolitan Magistrate's Court 3 of Rangpur passed the order on Friday.
Earlier, at around 9:15am, the former minister was brought to court under tight security.
Following the court order, he was taken back to Kotwali police station.
Nuruzzaman is the key accused in a case filed over the killing of one SM Munna during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on August 4.
After the court's decision, defence counsel Advocate Iftha Akhtar, speaking to the media, claimed Nuruzzaman was not in Rangpur during the incident and was wrongfully accused.
