Anti-discrimination students in Joypurhat hold protest, issue ultimatum

Demanded transfer of OCs from Joypurhat Sadar and Panchbibi stations

Update : 23 Jan 2025, 04:26 PM

Anti-discrimination students in Joypurhat on Thursday protested against the silence of the police despite Awami League activists roaming outside, as well as what they said was the connection between the police and Awami League along with Chhatra League, organizing a protest march and sit-in to press home their nine-point demand.

Students from schools and colleges gathered at Zero Point in the city and sat down on the road, chanting slogans against the police and lawyers.

Later, around noon, they held a protest march from Shaheed Dr Abul Kashem ground and positioned themselves in front of the superintendent of police’s office.

There, they chanted slogans, including demands for the transfer of officers in charge (OC) of Joypurhat Sadar and Panchbibi police stations.

Subsequently, they presented their nine-point demand.

Afterwards, they moved to the court premises and sat in front of the lawyers' building, reiterating their demands.

The demands are: immediate transfer of certain police officers responsible for indiscriminate shooting at students; ceasing the unconditional release of accused individuals involved in murder and sabotage cases; stopping police inaction despite complaints from students injured by the banned Chhatra League’s violence; addressing complaints against Chhatra League activities with proper action instead of neglect; reinstating police neutrality even after the fall of the fascist government; transferring police officers whose hands are "stained with the blood" of student activists to other locations; taking legal action against police officers who fired on protesters instead of granting them promotions; ensuring the swift trial of accused individuals who have been granted bail, and justice for all victims of police and political violence during the movement.

During the protest, representatives of the Joypurhat Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, including Yamur Rahman Nibir, Mubasshir Ali Shihab, KM Sajin, Farzan Hossain, Mohtasim Minal, Ehsan Ahmed Nahid, Mainul Islam Risalat, and Khairun Nahar Samitun Islam Mitun, were present.

The protesters issued a seven-day ultimatum, saying that if their demands were not met within this timeframe, they would announce larger demonstrations, including a blockade program.
