Gold weighing 250 bhori (a local measurement) was stolen from Nurani Jewelers in the upscale Al Hamra Shopping City in Sylhet city, resulting in a loss of approximately Tk3.5 crore.
Police have described the incident as mysterious.
On the night of Wednesday, or early Thursday morning, one or more thieves broke the lock of the shop on the fourth floor of Al Hamra, which was numbered 431, 433, and 435, and stole the gold. Afterward, they replaced the old lock with a new one.
In the morning, when the shop owner and employees arrived, they noticed the new lock had been broken, and they discovered the theft.
Upon receiving the news, the police and Al Hamra Shopping City business committee leaders visited the scene.
Deowan Mohammad Jabed Chowdhury, the owner of Nurani Jewelers, told this reporter that around 250 bhori of gold was in the shop, and the thieves took all of it. They left a new lock on the shutter.
He said that the loss amounted to approximately Tk3.5 crore.
He also mentioned that the shop had CCTV cameras, but the thieves took the CCTV DVR system, making it impossible to identify them.
However, the police are collecting footage from other CCTV cameras in the shopping mall.
He pointed out that after closing the shop, the responsibility for security lies with the market authorities and raised concerns about the negligence of the market's security personnel.
SMP (Sylhet Metropolitan Police) Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ziaul Haque stated that the incident appears to be mysterious, and the police are investigating the theft of 250 bhori of gold.
