Chittagong witnessed a chaotic turn of events on Monday afternoon as former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali police station, Md Nezam Uddin, was assaulted by BNP activists in front of the regional passport office in the city’s Panchlaish area.
The incident, which occurred around 2:30pm, unfolded as Nezam Uddin arrived to pick up his son from a school in the nearby residential area.
According to local and police sources, as the former OC stepped out of his private car near the passport office, he was surrounded by activists of the BNP’s Swechchhasebak Dal, led by Shaheedul Islam Shaheed, General Secretary of the Chawkbazar unit.
The activists reportedly confronted Nezam Uddin over alleged mistreatment and abuse they claimed to have suffered during his tenure as OC.
Tensions escalated quickly as they grabbed him by the collar, dragged him, and physically assaulted him, tearing his shirt in the process.
A video circulating on social media captured the scene, showing several individuals manhandling the officer and expressing anger over his past actions.
Panchlaish police station OC Md Solaiman confirmed the incident, saying: “Upon receiving information, police rushed to the scene and brought him into custody. He is currently at the police station.”
Meanwhile, BNP leaders and activists have gathered outside Panchlaish police station, surrounding it and staging demonstrations.
They demand the arrest of the former OC.
Despite the growing unrest, OC Solaiman said that no case had been filed against Nezam Uddin at the time of reporting.
Md Nezam Uddin previously served as OC of Kotwali, Bakalia, and Sadarghat police stations under Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
He was most recently posted as the OC of Patiya police station in Chittagong district before being transferred to Comilla, where he now serves as an inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
