The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a ban on all forms of rallies, processions, demonstrations and gatherings at Kamarpur, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector 10, and adjacent areas along the southern and western banks of the Turag River following a deadly clash between supporters of Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad over the Tongi Ijtema ground that left two dead.
The restriction, effective from 2pm on Wednesday, will remain in place until further notice, according to a public notification issued by DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali.
The ban has been enforced under Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance to maintain discipline in light of the prevailing situation, it said.
The clashes began at around 3am reportedly when one faction attempted to take control of the Ijtema ground.
The two deceased were Bachchu Mia, 70, from Kishoreganj, and Belal Hossain, 60, from Dakshinkhan, Dhaka.
The violence prompted the deployment of additional security forces, including four platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) also beefed up security in Kakrail Mosque and Dhaka Medical College Hospital areas.
