The Noakhali Division Implementation Struggle Council organized a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday, calling for Noakhali to be declared a division.
Addressing the gathering, speakers expressed disappointment over the prolonged delay in declaring Noakhali a division.
It is disheartening that we have to stand here and demand what is rightfully ours, they said.
They argued that Noakhali, which is larger in area than Khulna, has long been neglected in terms of administrative restructuring.
We will do whatever it takes to achieve this demand, they added.
The speakers also criticized past governments for failing to fulfil their promises regarding the creation of Noakhali Division.
The previous government assured us of this division, but instead, they relocated Rohingyas to our region without addressing our long-standing demand, they noted.
The participants highlighted the contributions of Noakhali to the nation, particularly its role in remittance earnings.
A significant number of Bangladesh’s remittance earners hail from Noakhali. The region also has all the prerequisites necessary for becoming a division, they said, citing population size and linguistic identity as additional factors supporting their demand.
In a message to the current administration, the organizers urged policymakers to consider the size, contributions, and unique characteristics of Noakhali.
We expect the government to declare Noakhali a division without further delay, they said, emphasizing their commitment to continuing the movement until their demand is met.
