Update : 10 Dec 2024, 10:37 PM

BNP leader Golam Mohammad Siraj, former MP of Bogra 5 and 6 constituencies, has emphasized the importance of unity, saying that they do not differentiate between Hindus and Muslims, highlighting a shared identity and mutual respect among all communities in Bangladesh.

He made this remark on Tuesday at a "Peace and Harmony" rally organized by the Sherpur Upazila BNP at 4pm.

The rally was held at the Sanyal Bari field near Kalachand Temple in Sherpur Municipality.

People of all faiths, including Hindus and Muslims, from the 10 unions of the municipality and the upazila, participated in the event.

The rally was presided over by Shahidul Islam, president of the Sherpur Upazila BNP.

Other attendees included BNP central committee member KM Mahbubur Rahman, Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dabibur Rahman, Upazila BNP general secretary Rafiqul Islam, Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council upazila president Barendra Chandra Sanyal, Puja Udjapan Parishad President Nimai Ghosh, Central General Secretary of the Indigenous Union Shrikanta Mahato, and Yasir Ali, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the upazila.

Addressing the rally, GM Siraj emphasized that there is no communal division among the people of the country.

He said: "In this country, people of all communities live together as one. There is no division among us. We respect people of all religions. It was the Awami League government that created divisions between Hindus and Muslims in Bangladesh."

He further said: "The Awami League has been distorting the history of the Liberation War. That distortion ended with the fall of Sheikh Hasina's fascist government, achieved through the anti-discrimination student movement. We pay our respects to everyone who participated in the student movement."

Highlighting the deprivation of voting rights, GM Siraj said: "The interim government must not fail to ensure a fair election system. The Awami League took away people’s rights, but in the days ahead, we will regain those rights."
