Rail communication between Dhaka and Tongi came to a halt early Monday after a freight train carriage derailed near Joynal Market in Uttara.
The incident occurred around 4:30am when a container train travelling from Kamalapur reached the Joynal Market area under the Airport Railway jurisdiction.
Tongi Railway Station Master Rakibur Rahman confirmed the derailment.
“A carriage of the train derailed on the downline towards Kamalapur, halting train movement in that direction,” he said.
Two passenger trains — Chittagong Mail and Sirajganj Express, bound for Kamalapur Railway Station — were stuck at Tongi Railway Station as a result.
"The rescue train from Dhaka arrived and began operations, but rail services will only resume once the rescue work is completed," the station master added.
As of 11am, the rescue operation was still ongoing. Passengers of stranded trains faced prolonged delays, and authorities have yet to confirm when services will return to normal.
The derailment has caused significant disruption to the rail schedule, with the situation expected to improve once the carriage is cleared and track conditions are restored.
