Factional clash within the BNP has left one person dead in Hemayetpur Union of Pabna.
The clash over establishing dominance left several others injured.
The incident took place in Betepara of Hemayetpur Union of Pabna Sadar Upazila on Saturday.
The deceased Jalal Uddin, 40, was the former general secretary of the local union BNP.
Police and locals said the two factions led by district BNP leaders Muntaj Ali and Abul Hashem had a longstanding enmity over supremacy in the area.
On Friday night, the two groups engaged an altercation over an Islamic event.
The following morning, the two groups engaged in a clash which led to the injury of several people.
They were rushed to Pabna General Hospital by the local people.
One of Hashem’s followers, Jalal Uddin, was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as his situation deteriorated.
Jalal succumbed to his injury on the way.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Pabna Sadar Police Station Abdus Salam confirmed the matter and said the body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
The law and order situation in the area is currently under control and additional policemen have been deployed, he added.
Pabna District BNP Member Secretary Advocate Masud Khandkar in this regard said: “I do not know anything about the matter.
But whoever is involved in the murder should be brought to book.”
