An elderly man’s left leg was severed in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar territory near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border in Ghumdhum, Naikhongchhari, Bandarban, on Friday.

The incident occurred on Friday evening at the zero line of the Bhajabonia border area in Ghumghum Union’s Ward 3.

According to police and local sources, the explosion happened when the man, Nurul Haque, was working on his field. It is suspected that Myanmar’s armed group, the Arakan Army (AA), had previously placed landmines along pathways near the zero line.

Locals reported hearing a loud explosion and rushed to assist Haque, who was then transported in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, where he is receiving treatment.

Anu, from Bhajabonia, said: “In the afternoon, while working close to the zero line, he was caught in the explosion, resulting in the loss of his left leg. A group of us rescued him and took him to the hospital.”

Ghumghum Union Parishad Chairman Jahangir Aziz confirmed the incident, saying that the injured man was provided immediate medical assistance.

Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masrurul Haque also confirmed the incident, adding that the injured individual is undergoing treatment at the MSF hospital in Kutupalong.
